About

from Vadym Mykhalchuk

artist statement

My approach to modern art has always been to explore the cultural identity of Ukraine, and to reveal the country’s character through kaleidoscopic geometric forms. As such, I am known for my diverse use of palettes and materials, with a freehand expression of mixed colors, abstract compositions and stylistic elements. In this process, I seek to show not only the conditions of a particular setting—say a local spot—but to highlight, through delicate contouring, the unpredictable impulse of life. I recognize the intricacies of modern applied art and have had a yearning curiosity for the theory and history of collections. For this reason, I am an art critic, holding qualifications with the National Academy of Culture and Arts Management; as well as a PhD in Art Criticism. I also dabble in the affairs of the Kyiv Club of Collectors, and participate actively in its various iconic auctions. These things take center stage in my life; it is an absolute fulfillment to participate in such priceless art events that define the artistic exuberance of Ukraine.

Inspiration

Vadym’s paintings reflect the many imperfections yet subtlety of life. He does not linger on the canvas; therefore the art he creates are borne out of impulse—a whim to manifest a fun and exciting image of the world. The absence of black tints in his works imitates the texture of everyday life, presenting an oasis of ideas combined into one that transcend the viewer’s train of thoughts. Every painting of his tells a unique story and a million more.  He is an avid traveler and draws inspiration from many landscapes across the world. Because of this, Vadym is never limited in his ideas. He somehow manages to transform real-life moments into abstract compositions that all meld beautifully into his imprinted colorful silhouettes. The main features of his work are therefore, not of the concrete frame, but of a deeper and more convoluted meaning. As such, Vadym does not concern himself with the portrait but more on the condition and character shown by the palette which is adorned with rhythmic colors. Though Vadym is a painter first, he is also a professional art critic, a fantastic collector and an admirable teacher. His repertoire of skills all intersect into an interesting gridlock of ideas and artful expressions. Vadym openly exchanges ideas with reputable painters, art historians, gallerists, collectors and even budding art students in his classes and seminars. For that reason, he not only bridges the gap between generations of Ukrainian art and culture, but also presents the country’s cultural code to the world in the most amicable fashion.

Techniques

Vadym has already established himself as one of the figures creating the modern art-space of Ukraine. To belong in this unique space, an artist is required to push the status-quo and to continuously test the limits of art forms. Vadym does this spectacularly, maneuvering through every art piece he creates, with aplomb, and expressing new ideas with the swift strokes of a paintbrush. This is essentially the reason why none of his paintings look or feel the same. What makes Vadym’s art impressive is his ability to improvise every project. His technique in the arts is unpredictable and quite cunny at times. Not many artists can instill realism, a sense of humor and nonvocal pleasantry into abstract paintings like Vadym does. And because his art form is brash and unconventional, he walks a tightrope between slight disenchantment and extreme ingenuity, somehow managing to create a positive image every time. This is the reason why Vadym is respected not only in Ukraine but in China, USA and the rest of Europe. Vadym’s techniques are reminiscent of Pablo Picasso’s, who, like the Ukrainian artist, was a master art visionary. Vadym shares a similar enthusiasm of avant-garde art form quite popular in 20th century European painting and sculpture. Cubism, as it is called, is a technique utilized by Vadym—a technique which breaks up somewhat human artworks into reassembled abstract forms. This makes it so that when a person views Vadym’s paintings, he or she may stand there for a while, wondering and pondering what the implications of each hues and tints mean.  The caricature effects are where Vadym shows his undying creativity. With each painting of the Ukrainian maestro, it almost seems as if the viewer is being pulled into a fantasy world, a world that speaks volume but shows little.  Vadym’s technique is minimalism in its greatest form.

Career highlights

Today, Vadym embodies what is considered a successful painter. His artworks have appeared in many art exhibitions and are in great demand in Ukraine and all over the world. Nowadays, he spends majority of his time making appearances in personal exhibitions showing new artwork after artwork. He is truly a remarkable artist, who is respected for his use of signs and symbols in paintings. V. Mykhalchuk is a well-respected member of the bureau of the painting section of the National Union of Artists of Ukraine. There are not enough words to describe Vadym, who constantly develops exhibitions for promoting new names in the Ukrainian (and global) art space. His work-ethic is also a source of inspiration, with many publications to his name where he promotes the achievements of fellow Ukrainian artists to a wider audience. As an educator, he has created textbooks containing dynamic practical materials for anyone interested in the gallery business and collecting. The following are a number of awards and honors highlighting Vadym’s achievements as an artist: ·      Honored Artist of Ukraine ·      Honorary Professor of Shenzhen Technological University, ·      Two orders – the Order of Saint Nicholas the Wonderworker and the Order of Saint Equal Apostle Prince Volodymyr (Full Knight),  ·      The Silver Medal of the National Academy of Art of Ukraine and various letters of thanks.  Vadym’s works continue to receive recognition nationally and worldwide.
